Bio

Award-winning oboist Angela Scates has appeared as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral performer across the U.S. In 2019, Angela reached semi-finalist status with the

National Endowment of the Arts’ Presidential Scholar program, was named a National YoungArts Foundation Competition Finalist, and received the Interlochen Arts Academy’s Young Artist Award, their highest honor.

Angela completed her Bachelor’s degree at The Juilliard School, studying with Elaine Douvas. She brought her passion for her craft to the various ensembles at Juilliard, including orchestra, opera, contemporary groups, and chamber music. During the summers, she has enhanced her education as a fellow at Music Academy (Santa Barbara, CA), studying with Eugene Izotov, and attended Hidden Valley Oboe Seminars with Elaine Douvas.

Angela is a featured oboe soloist on "One Afternoon" from the album Espresso, recorded by Bob James, an American Grammy Award-winning jazz keyboardist, arranger, and record producer. The album was released on August 31st of 2018. In September of 2018, Angela was interviewed and performed on Interlochen Public Radio.

At age thirteen, Angela entered the Interlochen Arts Academy to devote all of her focus towards her musical interests. She studied under Dan Stolper and Dane Philipsen during her four years. Throughout her time there, she was a 2017 and 2018 recipient of the Interlochen Fine Arts Award in Music, and was a finalist in their concerto competition.

Angela made her solo debut at Carnegie Weill Recital Hall in New York at age 13, presented by the American Protégé International Competition.

Deeply passionate about social justice, Angela strives to bring classical music to less privileged areas. She loves performing for the disadvantaged youth and healthcare facilities throughout New York. Since music is the universal language, she provides a common element that supports the unification of communities, and hopes to bring an interlude of solace to the lives of those who need it.

Actor

In fall of 2022, Angela began taking private acting coaching with Tommy Buck at T. Schreiber Studio, where she began developing her love for the art form. In June of 2023, she portrayed the role of Sultry Woman in OZÑ Valle’s Aura music video, by CK Productions, as well as took T. Schreiber's Beginner Technique Class and Scene Study.

Angela has always been infatuated with the world of film, loving its power in the way it incorporates all art areas. From a young age, she fell in love with horror movies, which she believed to have been the only way of dismissing her anxieties, transporting her into another world. She loves being able to escape reality and experience life through the lens of the characters she is trying to portray.

Angela's love for acting grew as she continued to work on her craft, continuing her studies by taking Pamela Kramer's Dying for the Camera 3 week Horror Class in July of 2023, and began acting coaching with her privately, beginning in November.
